Wolf Parade is back with their second full-length album, titled “At Mount Zoomer.” It’s refreshing to hear new Wolf Parade after having their other (fantastic) songs basically on repeat for months, so let us break it down, song by song:

1. “Soldier’s Grin“

Good up-tempo song to kick off the album. Boeckner has a more mainstream sound than Krug, so I’m not surprised they went with him to begin the album. “Soldier’s Grin” is not one of Boeckner’s most fantastic jaw dropping songs ever, but it gets the job done. It has a catchy rhythm, and good lyrics (”Horse shapen fire, draggin’ stereo wire,” love that line for some reason.) But it’s not about the lyrics on paper, as Boeckner professes, it’s about the delivery. His vocals make it work, and make it worth a listen.

2. “Call It A Ritual“

The song that was pre-released by Sub Pop. It could be their first single, and I think it should be. A more tame song from Krug than most Wolf Parade listeners are used to, but it’s good to hear. The song maintains a steady, linear pattern throughout, again a little unusual for Wolf Parade listeners. I think this song shows that they wanted to go in another direction with this album, not making it a carbon copy of “Apologies to the Queen Mary.” I’m glad they did that. Nothing would have been worse than hearing 10 new “Shine A Light”’s or “I’ll Believe In Anything”’s, re-branded.

3. “Language City“

One of the better tracks off the album, with an extremely catchy melody. The guitars are simply fantastic, coming in at just the right precise moments. This song is also perfect for Boeckner’s vocals. This is “the” song for him, and he knows it too. It may very well end up being my favourite Boeckner track of all time.

4. “Bang Your Drum“

People say that this song sounds like it belongs on a Sunset Rubdown album, and I have to agree, but is that really a bad thing? It sounds like Spencer Krug, what did you expect? It is one of my favourites on the album. It’s quick and to the point. It turns a corner with Krug’s first shout of “Take a dive!” and continues on it’s merry way from there.

5. “California Dreamer“

The much anticipated track. People making predictions about it from grainy, poor-quality YouTube videos of live performances. They were touting it as the next greatest song. I really don’t see it like that at all. Yes, it is a very good song, but it’s not one of my favourites on the album. The “Think I might’ve heard you on the radio” chorus line helps make it one of the better songs on the album, just not the top song. It pains me to say this about a Wolf Parade song, but the lyrics are not the greatest (”I’ll be ’round, I’ll be ’round, I’ll be ’round. Like a teenager in town.”) Don’t get me wrong, I like this song, I just don’t think it lived up to the expectations I had for it.

6. “The Grey Estates“

This is the song you play to people who haven’t listened to Wolf Parade before. The ultimate catchy song. Probably the easiest song to pick up and listen to on the album, and it brings an element that the album needed. Boeckner definitely experimented with some other styles with this one, and I think it worked out very well. The little switch in the tempo at the end was pulled off beautifully, and solidified it’s spot as one of my favourites from the new album.

7. “Fine Young Cannibals“

Really the surprise track off this album for me. It starts off slow, and you don’t expect much out of it, but it leaves a lasting impression. For a Boeckner song, the guitars and keyboards work out surprisingly well. I really don’t know what else to write about this song, other than to check it out for yourself. If you’re a fan of Wolf Parade, it will likely leave you stunned.

8. “An Animal In Your Care“

Do not be fooled by the first half of this song. It starts out painfully slow and boring. The second half is a complete other story. I was skipping over this song constantly before I read comments left by people saying that the second half is awesome. I gave it a listen and it completely changed my outlook of this song. Just another case of having to listen through an entire song before passing judgement on it. Krug absolutely did it on purpose too, almost like an intentional contrast in the middle of a song.

9. “Kissing the Beehive“

Oh boy. This Krug/Boeckner collaborative effort has to be the fastest eleven-minute song I’ve ever heard. You get caught in the moment, and it doesn’t seem like eleven minutes at all. A fantastic way to end an album. “As if you didn’t know that it would sting!” There are so many levels on this song, which they are able to include due to it’s length. They could have probably split the song up into three parts, but there’s no sense in that. The whole thing together is just something you must hear for yourself.

Overall, a great job done by Wolf Parade, yet again. They kept it simple, but changed things up from their previous album. I believe that this album will not only generate new fans for the band, but also not disappoint their current fans. That’s a feat to be proud of in the music business.

Here are my favourite songs, in order. Feel free to share your own in the comments:

1. “Bang Your Drum”

2. “Fine Young Cannibals”

3. “The Grey Estates”

4. “Language City”

5. “Kissing the Beehive”

6. “An Animal in Your Care”

7. “California Dreamer”

8. “Soldier’s Grin”

9. “Call It a Ritual”

Every Friday, Harmonix announces the next set of tracks to be released the following week for their music game Rock Band. Yesterday Harmonix announced 3 new songs for their popular game:

“Zero” - Smashing Pumpkins

“Red Tandy” - The Mother Hips

“Time Sick Son of a Grizzly Bear” - The Mother Hips

More details after the jump.

The Mother Hips are a throwback to 1960’s psychedelic rock. With a soft sound and an emphasis on vocals, they are definitely a relaxing listen. What may surprise you is that they have been around for almost 20 years, including a one year hiatus. Active since 1991, they have put out 6 full albums and 4 EPs. They have become a cult hit so to speak, though never gaining attention from the mainstream. They are currently touring the midwest if you are looking for a show to go to. Their previous song in Rock Band was “Time We Had” off their newest album.

You can visit their website here. Here are the songs that will be hitting Rock Band next Tuesday:

“Time Sick Son of a Grizzly Bear”

“Red Tandy”

While you may not have heard of the Mother Hips, I am sure most of you are at least aware of Alternative rock group Smashing Pumpkins. A mainstay of 90’s alternative rock radio, the smashing pumpkins are one of the few bands of the last 20 years to not only have large mainstream success, but also be extremely talented. After breaking up in 2000, lead singer Billy Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin got back together in 2006, using the Smashing Pumpkins name. They recorded an album together and continue to tour. They hope to start working on new material after the current tour schedule.

Harmonix has stuck with classic Pumpkins with Rock Band so far. “Cherub Rock” was included with the game, and “Siva” was later offered as a download. Next week, “Zero” can be added to that list.

This is a series I plan to keep ongoing. Spanning my musical tastes, I hope to merely suggest, and review, exceptional albums. My hope is that even if you are not a fan of the particular genre or style, you very well could still enjoy these albums. When choosing an album, I intend to find albums that transcend, that can reach all people. The blog as a whole is doing an in depth, song by song, series like this with Radiohead’s In Rainbows (which you can expect the next part soon). The first album in the series is Pink Floyd’s classic, Dark Side of the Moon . My thoughts and suggestions after the jump.

Dark Side of the Moon is a defining moment in rock history. Considered by many to be Pink Floyd’s greatest work, it is one of the top selling albums of all time. This album is more than music, it is an experience. From start to finish, it is meant to be listen to as a whole. Tracks run one into the next seamlessly (other than switching sides on the original vinyl). As I listen to this album, the desire to drop what I am doing, close my eyes, and just listen nearly overwhelms me. Whether you answer that call or not, you will lose yourself in the music and before you know it the album is almost over.

The intro to the album, “Speak to Me” is slow and quiet. At normal volume levels you might go a full minute before you hear anything. A bass drum beats rhythmically, like a heart beat. Building up to some chatter and finally a scream, almost as if you are an infant coming into the world for the first time. The music shifts to to the next track, “Breathe.”

“Breathe” is a relaxing melody of guitar and drums. The song almost begs you to lay down and close your eyes. The lyrics reflect on life in an abstract way. ” all you touch and all you see
Is all your life will ever be” sets the stage for the rest of the album, which touches on money, religion, growing up, and getting old. The 3rd verse equates life to a rabbit endlessly digging holes, one after the other. The last line, ” You race towards an early grave” hits right before the next song starts.

If “Breathe” relaxed you, “On the Run” could cause some tension. Suspenseful music leaves a slight fear in the back of your mind. Running footsteps dubbed over the constant beat allude to the feeling of being chased. Ominous voices and laughter add to the trip, which ends in an explosion and the faint pitter-patter of running footsteps growing tired.

“Time” starts with a chorus of clocks chiming as if it were the top of the hour. Hollow drums beat away with a constant deep bellow drawing you in and lead right up to the opening line, ” Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day.” The song continues, reminiscing on how fast time goes by and the daily drudge of life. The track ends with a “Breathe” reprise, almost a continuation of that second track. From chasing the sun to ending up back at home, “Time” is a will make you wonder where yours went.

“The Great Gig in the Sky” brings to light the thought of death. Mostly instrumental, the song starts with a slow piano melody leading into a voice over, “And I am not frightened of dying… … There’s no reason for it, you’ve gotta go sometime.” After which the track builds up to a sonic climax before winding down to a relaxing piano, almost a throwback to the second track “Breathe” though much slower. Finally ending in the first bit of silence since the start of the album.

Side two of the LP, or just the next track on your CD, “Money” uses tongue-in-cheek humor to address something we are so dependent on in the modern world. Lyrics describe the conflict perfectly, we all want it, but we don’t want anyone else to get ours. Sounds of cash registers and coins clanking fill the first half of the song. The upbeat and catchy music could be stuck in your head for days. This song has the most intensive guitar work of the album. Chattering over the music run right into the next track.

After the up-beat and engaging “Money” comes the relaxing and slow “Us and Them.” Starting slow, the song builds up in each verse, resetting to the slow relaxing melody after each. As the song builds up, the lyrics describe a conflict of some sort, almost like a mini climax or escalation. The song repeats the cycle four times, three with lyrics, taking you on a roller coaster ride that alludes to real life relationships.

“Any Colour You Like” is an up-beat track. All instrumental, the spacey noises give it a personality of it’s own and serve as a great bridge to the ending tacks. Just keep your eyes open and you won’t get lost, though that is true for pretty much all of these songs.

“Brain Damage” and “Eclipse” close out the album. Addressing old age and becoming senile, it is almost as if you lived an entire life through this album. The former describing a lunatic living in your head and traveling to the dark side of the moon. The latter being a climactic piece touching on the reflective state many reach at the end of their lives, how it all came together under the sun but in the end is eclipsed by the moon. The album ends on a quiet bass drum just as it started, except this time is stops suddenly instead of fading away.

Wait how did I end up over here? That should be the question you ask yourself after taking the ride that “The Dark Side of the Moon” is. In a way few other albums can, you feel like you started in one place and ended up in another. One thing I have not mentioned yet is the use of stereo audio in this album. Many times throughout there are different things going on in each ear. I highly recommend headphones. Time will tick away unnoticed and you will be out of 40 minutes quickly after you start this album, but I cannot think of anything else I would rather do with 40 minutes of my time. So pick this one up, get some headphones, sit down, relax, and enjoy the journey.

Have an album you think everyone should listen to before they die? Let me know in a comment and I will be sure to check it out. It can be any genre, any style, whatever. Or maybe you took me up on my offer and decided to experience this album. Let me know what you think. I hope to bring you a new album once a month or so, maybe more often if I feel inclined.

These are my favorite bands and artists as of 4/24/08. Every single day, this list changes. In addition to numerically listing them 1-25, I have also put in parenthesis whether their stock is rising, falling, or simply staying put.

Rising usually means that the band/artist is constantly being listened to by me. Bands usually rise when they put out new material or I discover some of their older material. Falling usually means that I haven’t listened to the band a lot recently. A prime example would be the Pixies. They are one of the greatest bands of all time, but I simply haven’t really listened to them much recently. As a result, other bands such as Animal Collective and Peter Bjorn and John have moved ahead of Pixies. Staying put usually means that I really haven’t changed my listening patterns in terms of that band/artist. For instance, I listen to Radiohead every day, but not as much as say some of the rising bands. Here is the list:

Sound Central resident hardcore gamer here. As a fan of both music and video games, Rock Band is one my favorite games of the last couple years. If you are not a fan, or have not heard of the game you can read about it here. It is a full band simulator with plastic guitars and drums that allow you to play songs with other people, much like Guitar Hero but with a full band.

Recently Rock Band made history by releasing a band’s new single through their game simultaneously with the release of the video and radio play. Next week they will make history again by offering the first ever full album in a music game. More after the jump.

One thing Rock Band has done that is worthy of notice in the music world, is offer hundreds of songs to the gamers, exposing them to music across decades and genres. It is the hope of the developer Harmonix to allow their fans to experience music they may have never heard, or introduce them to historic albums and bands. They are able to do this by releasing new songs for download every week, something no other game has done before. These last couple weeks they have begun to turn a corner.

This coming Tuesday, April 22, Rock Band players will be offered their first full album download. Judas Priest’s Screaming for Vengeance will be available to all Xbox 360 and PS3 users. Originally released in 1982 it is the first Judas Priest album to go platinum. It is considered by many to be one of the more influential metal albums of all time. It has the #1 hit and hard rock radio mainstay, “You Got Another Thing Comin’” as well as a staple of live performances and fan favorite, “Electric Eye.”

Personally I find this to be a great addition to Rock Band. The game needs more 80’s music, especially harder stuff in general. As an album, Screaming for Vengeance delivers. More mainstream than a majority of metal now, or even back then, the album is straight up rock. “The Hellion/Electric Eye” is a fantastic open to a great album. Catchy and fast paced, they set the tone for the other 7 songs. It does slow down a bit towards the middle with “Bloodstone” and “Pain and Pleasure,” but picks up again nicely with the up-tempo “Screaming for Vengeance” and the popular “You Got Another Thing Comin.’” Capping it off with “Fever” and “Devil’s Child,” Screaming for Vengeance could leave you screaming for more. This is a must listen for any metal fan, and a good gateway to heavier stuff for people on the fence/unfamiliar with the genre.

Also announced were two more albums for the upcoming months. You can expect to see The Cars from the Cars and Doolittle from the Pixies by the time summer hits full swing. I’ll give those an in-depth preview once a release date is set.

In other news, on April 15, 2008 a band released their new single through a video game for the first time. Motley Crue’s newest single, “Saints of Los Angeles” was released for download at the same time as radio stations began to play it, and the video was premiered. It is the first single for their upcoming album titled Saints of Los Angeles, due out June 17, 2008.

“Saints of Los Angeles” has a retro feel to it, and rightfully so being from a band that saw their prime in the 80’s. Yet at the same time it is exactly what present day mainstream rock should be. It’s not very technical, fast paced, and catchy as hell. Bass, guitar, and drums all shine here, though vocals are a little lacking, but they are straightforward and coherent which is a good thing in this case. This isn’t the greatest song in the world, but if more mainstream rock was like this we just might be better off.

You can hear the new Motley Crue single, “Saints of Los Angeles” here.

Here it is, the first instalment of the “In Rainbows” collaborative review. First on the docket, “15 Step.” Here’s what the Sound Central bloggers think of it:

Greg Balloch: This song is another great example of Thom Yorke’s innate ability to sing on the off beat, right off the bat. The creative drum beat is met by the soothing guitars later in the song, at a perfect moment. The song branches out into a lulling melody, but all the while keeping its up-beat tempo. Radiohead’s techno-ish mixing skills are on display in this song, which really gives it depth. This song is more than merely an icebreaker for the album, it sets the bar high. As the bass-line drew me in, I realized that there really was no genre to describe this song. It’s unclassifiable, and I like it that way.

Michael Barr: In my opinion, this song doesn’t really hit the right notes. It’s one of those songs that makes me feel like I’m in a bad dream. I like decent bass, but this just lacked construction to be honest. I couldn’t really detect a chorus or any power to it, which are my general interests. I like the serenading vocals, but you need something a bit stronger to back it up, like another singer or a demanding instrument. The guitar is on a soft tone and backed up by what sounds like a bongo drum or something in the background. It’s a reasonably slow song and I was a tad bored amidst the 4 minutes of similarity. However it’s relatively easy to listen to, and good if you just want to relax. With patience I may eventually like it, but for now it’s a miss.

Glen Maganzini: “15 Step” is one of the finest and for sure most upbeat song on In Rainbows. The song starts off with a highly energetic “How come I end up where I started/How come I end up where I went wrong” and then transitions into a slower, yet guitar laden rhythm. The same beat is established throughout the song’s entire and this is perfect as Thom Yorke’s vocals waver to keep up with it. Looking at the song from a meanings perspective, Yorke writes about some kind of mistake that he made that takes him back to where he started. After a break in the song, a group of children scream, perhaps giving Yorke hope for better things, but the song ends on a shallow note: “Won’t take my eyes off the ball again/You reel me out and you cut the string.”

Chris Hedden: The introduction to Radiohead’s latest album, In Rainbows, is 15 Step, a song that starts out more like an outtake from Thom Yorke’s solo record The Eraser with it’s synthy beats, but is rather quickly joined by some understated guitar, drum, and bass. The joint collaboration between Yorke and the rest of the band is felt as the song ventures back and forth between the two variants in sound as the instruments that quickly join in on the track fade by the middle section, leaving the synths, various sounds(including children cheering), and Yorke’s signature vocals, making it a sort of bridge between Rainbows and The Eraser. As usual, the thing that impresses me most often about Radiohead is their ability to create songs that have such musical depth to them, and 15 Step happens to be no exception. It took some time for the song to grow on me, but learning an instrument myself has caused me to pay much more to attention to what goes on musically in records, and that’s what Radiohead really excels at. Not to say Yorke doesn’t write his share of great lyrics (Videotape at the end of In Rainbows for example), but that’s not really the focus for 15 Step.
